About Nelson Cable's internet system
In December 2014 Nelson Cable launched an system-wide upgrade to its Nellysford and Wintergreen internet networks, adding new fiber optic lines as well as new software. The result brought service to more homes and businesses in the area and speeds similar to what is available in metropolitan areas. Before these changes, the highest maximum download speed Nelson Cable offered was 10 Mbps. The new highest level download speed is now up to 100 Mbps.
It is more than just higher speeds, however. “These upgrades allowed all our internet customers, at every service level, to have more consistent speeds. We are able to handle more customers during times of high use. This means Nelson Cable can more confidently deliver the speeds at every level as well as provide higher levels of bandwidth,” says John Holman, Chief Technical Officer at Nelson Cable. “With more capacity from our new fiber optic lines and DOCSIS 3, we can connect to multiple channels at once, where we could connect only to a single path before.”
"Nelson Cable was formed 40 years ago to provide higher quality television services. In recent years we have worked on delivering high quality internet capabilities. This collection of the new technologies will not only provide us with the capacity to handle current internet technologies more efficiently, it should also meet future broadband demands," says Nelson Cable President and Chief Executive Officer Joe Lee McClellan.
The network upgrade included new fiber optic lines to the company’s base serving Wintergreen as well as equipment and software permitting a change from the former Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS) 1.0 to state-of-the-art DOCSIS 3.
“Improving and expanding broadband in and around Wintergreen should help boost values on residential properties,” notes Sarah L. Holman, Vice President of Business Development at Nelson Cable. “We expect those renting vacation properties here will find that offering higher speed internet will give then a competitive edge. And, of course, many of the businesses in the area should benefit.”
Only half of the rural population in the United States has access to download speeds 25 Mbps or more while over 90 percent of those living in urban areas have access to those speeds, according to a July 2014 report from the US Department of Commerce.
Nelson Cable now offers the fastest internet service available to homes in Wintergreen Resort. The firm also provides high definition television services, digital VoIP telephone services and installs satellite high-speed internet equipment.
